How did this book come about?
Ancient to the Future held two highly successful Extreme Weather and Inequality discussions at Lamar University. To bring in young voices, we then offered a $5,000 writing prize on the issues to students at each of the five biggest high schools in Jefferson County. Several hundred entries came in. This new book is a broad selection of the best.
A big thank you to all the participants, writers, judges, editors, the publisher, and all our supporters in Jefferson County’s schools and communities.
For the competition, prizes were given for the best writing on extreme weather and inequality. It could be fiction or non-fiction, poetry or spoken word, in English or Spanish, 1500 words maximum. Winners had to be enrolled at Beaumont United, Memorial, Nederland, Port Neches-Groves, or West Brook High School in Jefferson County, TX.

A $5,000 prize for one student at each high school was planned: $1,000 in cash and $4,000 applied towards the student’s post-high-school education. The judges were so impressed they also awarded two $1,000 cash special mentions.
The deadline was October 15, 2023. Seniors graduating in May 2023 were able to participate if they sent their writing/spoken word by July 1, 2023.
